Charlotte is known as the "Queen City". It is named after Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg - the queen consort of King George III - hence the nickname Queen City. Being a major banking center (with the headquarters of both Bank of America and Wachovia), there are definitely other reasons to call it the queen city! When I visit Charlotte, I stay close to South Park Mall. Not only are there a ton of nice hotels in the area, but there are restaurants everywhere as well. The mall itself has pretty much anything you would want.

As far as gyms go, the YMCA is definitely the place to be. I used to go to the YMCA in the Wachovia headquarters building downtown. The lunch crowd at this location is HOT HOT HOT! If you are looking for more of the gay-boy gym, the Dowd YMCA (just outside of downtown) is both a very nice facility, and filled with homos (although most are closeted).

RALEIGH

Raleigh is not only the capitol of North Carolina, but it is also part of what is known as the Triangle area of North Carolina. The three cities that make up the triangle are Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. This area is also home to a number of well-known universities including Duke University, NC State, and University of North Carolina. Although I did not make it to any of the colleges during this trip, I was fortunate to take a tour of Duke a few years ago. The campus is architecturally stunning. It was originally Trinity College until Washington Duke endowed the university and it was renamed Duke. At that time, a new campus was also built in the Gothic style with the feel and design of an ivy-league school (pictured above).

When in Raleigh, I usually stay close to Crabtree Valley Mall. This area is not only centrally located in the triangle area, but it also offers good choices in both restaurants and gyms. I usually work out at the Gold's Gym in North Hills. North Hills is an outdoor "lifestyle center" with all sorts of shops and restaurants. The Gold's Gym in the middle of this shopping center is definitely worth the drive. The facility is nice and features a ton of great equipment. Although this gym is almost entirely straight, there is some eye-candy to keep your attention as you workout.

In addition to being a major college area, Raleigh is also about 45 minutes from Fayetteville, North Carolina. I stopped in Fayetteville for the night before coming to Raleigh. Fayetteville is home to Fort Bragg; one of the largest military bases in the country and home of the Airborne and Special Operations Forces. Since the city of Fayetteville is very small, a lot of the military men head to the Raleigh area to go out on the town. COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA

FORT LAUDERDALE

I was born and raised in South Florida, so I have a unique perspective on Ft. Lauderdale. When I visited Ft. Although it is not a very large resort, it is quiet and very quaint. If you do not stay on the beach, I would definitely recommend staying close to either downtown Ft. Lauderdale or the Wilton Manor area (Wilton Manor is the gay "ghetto" of Ft. Lauderdale).

When visiting Ft. Lauderdale, there are a few good gym options. There is a Bally Total Fitness on Commercial Blvd. that has reasonably nice equipment and is pretty gay as well. It seems to be a little bit of an older crowd at this gym.

If you are looking for the younger hotties, the LA Fitness on US1 is packed with some amazingly hot guys. This is definitely a mixed crowd; but there is definitely a fair share of hot gay boys. The 5pm prime-time hour is definitely the time to go to see the best eye-candy.

Considering its reputation as a working-class city in the Midwest, Milwaukee is not what I expected. The downtown area is surprisingly walkable...more so than most comparable sized cities. The last few times I have been to Milwaukee I have stayed about 8 minutes north of downtown. I prefer this location now because it is close to Bayshore Mall. Bayshore Mall is an outdoor mall with a lot of great food options. This is also the location of the Milwaukee LA Fitness. Although this gym is never packed, it has great equipment and the facility is very nice as well. There are also a lot of very hot straight guys at this gym....so the eye candy is great as well. Chicago is truly one of the best cities in the USA. Although it is a huge city, Chicago does not feel overwhelming at all. One thing nice about gay Chicago is how close everything is to each other. Although there are gay bars spread out throughout a number of the neighborhoods, the center of gay Chicago is Boystown. Halsted Street runs right through the center of Boystown and is the location of many of the popular gay bars. On Halsted Street you will find SideTrack (a great video bar!), Spin (Dance and Cocktails), and Hydrate (Dance). There is also a huge bathhouse in the center of Boystown (Steamworks) right next to all of the gay bars. The one thing that is different about Chicago is the type of guy that goes to Steamworks.
